The variety of grape determinates the wine's main characteristics and has been used long ago to establish the characteristics and qualities of the region's wines. In Spain, there are currently around 150 varieties of grapes planted out on an industrialised basis destined for winemaking.
The soil, climate, variety, altitude... establish the characteristics of the varieties cultivated in the Registered Trade Name area and become manifest in the strong personality of Valdepeñas wines. |
The authorised grape varieties of Valdepeñas Registered Trade Name wines are: Airén, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatel small grapes.
All red wines grouped together under the Valdepeñas Registered Trade Name, are made exclusively using grapes of the following varieties: Cencibel or Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sirah and Petit Verdot, being the main variety Cencibel which is cultivated on more than 80% of the surface for red varieties.
